GRID3 publishes population estimates for all of sub-Saharan Africa

March 16, 2026

GRID3, with partner WorldPop at the University of Southampton, has published population estimates that are aligned with GRID3 settlement extents. These open-access data cover 49 countries and three small island territories in sub-Saharan Africa.

The estimates are generated by WorldPop using the data and methodologies behind its recently produced WorldPop Global 2 product. The estimates enable users of the GRID3 sub-Saharan Africa  settlement extent data to add gridded population estimates to the extents in a fully integrated manner.

The population estimates, including detailed release notes outlining the methodology and usage terms, are available for download here.

Users looking for population estimates only for Nigeria should use these data, while users looking only for DRC data can go here. These estimates incorporate high-resolution input data and use more advanced statistical methods than GIRD3 regional estimates.
